This coupling consists of three parts: a hub that connects to the input shaft, a hub that connects to the output shaft, and a floating member that connects to the first two through a tongue and groove in the center of the coupling. The language and groove on one side are at 90° or perpendicular to the tongue and groove on the other. The input and output shafts rotate around their centers at the same speed as the intermediate member. The center forms a circular track halfway around the input and output shafts every two revolutions. To prevent backlash, springs are usually used.

This coupling accommodates lateral shaft misalignment of up to 10% of the nominal shaft diameter and angular misalignment of up to 3°. Lubrication can be an issue, but it can be overcome in most applications by choosing a coupling that uses wear-resistant plastic or elastomer members instead of steel or bronze floating members.
